The women returned just before evening.
Biscuit greeted them at the door.
“WELCOME BACK. DID YOU ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY ITEMS?”
Fiona set her bags on the counter.
“Most of them.”
Sharon placed her new hat on Biscuit’s head.
“There. You look distinguished.”
Biscuit paused.
“MY APPEARANCE HAS BEEN MODIFIED.”
Suzy headed behind the counter.
“Don’t let it go to your head, Biscuit. Sharon’s been dressing everybody all afternoon.”
Fiona began unpacking her purchases.
Measuring cups.
Tuna.
Mayonnaise.
Crackers.
Olives.
Ceramic rooster.
Artificial palm tree.
Storage containers.
Then she stopped.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake!”
Sharon looked over.
“What?”
“I forgot the one thing I went shopping for!”
Suzy turned around.
“What was it?”
“Lightbulbs!”
There was a long silence.
Then Sharon began laughing.
Suzy rested both hands on the counter.
“Let me understand this. We spent three hours following blinking lights around a store, and you forgot to buy lightbulbs?”
Fiona nodded miserably.
Biscuit’s eyes illuminated.
“WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO LOCATE LIGHTBULBS?”
“NO!” all three women shouted.
Biscuit paused.
“REQUEST DENIED.”
Suzy started laughing.
Sharon leaned against the counter, wiping her eyes.
Fiona tried to maintain her dignity.
“Well, at least we had a productive afternoon.”
Suzy looked at the artificial palm tree.
“Absolutely. Nothing says productive like bringing home a tree that doesn’t need watering.”
Sharon adjusted Biscuit’s hat.
“Same time next Thursday?”
Fiona immediately brightened.
“I know a store with electronic shopping carts!”
Suzy reached for her pepper grinder.
“Wonderful. Next week we’ll let the groceries drive us home.”
Biscuit’s eyes flashed.
“SHALL I ADD THAT TO THE CALENDAR?”
All three women: “BISCUIT!”
Fade out as Biscuit announces:
“SEARCHING FOR ELECTRONIC SHOPPING CARTS.”
