Rollie Goes for Certification

Rollie was a plain white roll with big dreams. Every day he looked across the aisle, where Platinum Plush sat in a shiny wrapper covered in gold seals. FSC. Green Seal. Made Safe. Platinum Plush never let anyone forget it.

“Some of us are certified,” Platinum Plush would say, fluffing his quilted sheets. “And some of us are… just paper.”

So one morning Rollie marched down to the Certification Office.

The inspector looked him over. “No FSC certification, no Green Seal, no lab results. I’m afraid you’re not qualified for the job.”

“Not yet,” said Rollie, “but I’m on a roll.”

The inspector sighed. “Fine. Show me your paperwork.”

“I am the paperwork,” said Rollie.

“Where did your fiber come from?”

Rollie shifted on his cardboard tube. “Let’s not dig up my roots.”

The inspector asked for his PFAS test results. Rollie leaned in and whispered, “Those are private. Strictly between me and the plumbing.”

“Your application is full of holes,” the inspector said.

“Those are perforations,” Rollie said. “They’re on purpose.”

When the inspector asked why he hadn’t applied sooner, Rollie just unrolled his excuses, one sheet at a time, until they covered the whole floor.

Just then, the door swung open and in strutted Platinum Plush, here for his yearly renewal. “Still trying, little Rollie?” he laughed. “Some rolls are born to wear gold.”

The inspector looked at the two of them. “There’s one more test I give everyone,” she said. “The jar test. It doesn’t care about seals. It only asks one question: will you break down, or will you back up the pipes?”

Platinum Plush went first. Into the jar, lid on, a good hard shake. Ten seconds later, he was still in one thick, quilted clump.

“Oh dear,” said the inspector. “Your seals are fine. It’s all that plush quilting that won’t let go. That’s how septic tanks cry.”

Then it was Rollie’s turn. Into the jar, lid on, shake shake shake.

Ten seconds later, Rollie was in pieces.

The inspector smiled. “You failed every certification I have,” she said. “But your pipes will love you.”

Platinum Plush sat dripping in his jar, gold seals peeling off one by one.

Rollie floated happily in the water. “Story of my life,” he said. “I only shine when I fall apart under pressure.”

The moral

A gold seal tells you where the paper came from. The jar tells you where it’s going.
