At the end of the next aisle, they encountered a demonstration kiosk featuring a cheerful digital shopping assistant.
A bright animated face appeared on the screen.
“HELLO, SHOPPERS! HOW CAN I IMPROVE YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE?”
Sharon stepped forward.
“Can you tell us where the restroom is?”
“CERTAINLY! WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE OUR SELECTION OF BATHROOM ACCESSORIES?”
“No, dear. The actual restroom.”
“ARE YOU INTERESTED IN TOWELS?”
Suzy approached.
“Listen, sweetheart. This lady needs a toilet, not a towel collection.”
“WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXPLORE HOME IMPROVEMENT?”
Fiona shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.”
The screen brightened.
“HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU WITH YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE?”
Sharon considered the question.
“Well, the hats were lovely.”
“THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!”
Suzy leaned toward the screen.
“Do you know any good jokes?”
“WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHOP FOR PARTY SUPPLIES?”
“No. But I know one.”
The screen waited.
“Three women walked into a department store. Two hours later, the department store asked for a transfer.”
A passing employee laughed so hard she had to stop pushing her cart.
The screen flashed.
“I DID NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR REQUEST.”
“Neither did we,” Sharon replied. “And we’ve been here the whole time.”
