By the time they reached groceries, Fiona was determined to regain control.
“I need tuna, mayonnaise, crackers, and olives.”
“Good,” Suzy said. “Four things. We might be home by Christmas.”
Fiona scanned a can of tuna with her phone.
A notification appeared.
“SPECIAL OFFER! ADD MAYONNAISE TO YOUR CART!”
Sharon clapped.
“Oh, look! It knows what goes with tuna!”
Suzy raised an eyebrow.
“That’s impressive. I’ve been putting mayonnaise with tuna for fifty years without a computer supervising me.”
Fiona tapped the offer.
A shelf light started blinking.
“There it is!”
They walked toward the mayonnaise.
But another shopper was standing directly in front of the flashing label.
“Excuse me,” Fiona said. “I believe that’s my mayonnaise.”
The woman looked startled.
“Your mayonnaise?”
“The light is blinking for me.”
The woman glanced at the shelf.
“Well, I was here first.”
Sharon quickly intervened.
“There’s plenty for everybody.”
Suzy picked up two jars.
“Ladies, this is mayonnaise, not beachfront property.”
The woman laughed.
Fiona looked at her phone.
“Now it says I might like potato chips.”
Sharon leaned closer.
“Do you?”
“Yes, but that’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point?”
“I don’t want a machine telling me what I want!”
Suzy dropped a bag of chips into the cart.
“Fine. I’ll tell you. You want chips.”
