Scene 1: A Shopping Trip Is Born
It was a perfectly respectable Thursday morning at the Theming Cafe until Fiona walked in carrying a shopping list long enough to qualify as a table runner.
Sharon followed her through the door.
“Tell her,” Sharon said.
Suzy looked up from a skillet of sizzling potatoes, peppers, and onions.
“Tell her what?”
“That shopping is not an Olympic event.”
“It is when you shop with amateurs,” Fiona replied, unfolding her list across the counter.
Suzy leaned forward.
“Good heavens. Are you buying groceries or furnishing a small country?”
“Neither. I need a few things.”
Sharon laughed. “She has seventeen departments listed.”
“Eighteen,” Fiona corrected. “I added garden supplies.”
Suzy glanced at the clock.
“I've got a better idea. We finish lunch, close the cafe at our regular time, and make an afternoon of it.”
Sharon brightened. “All three of us?”
“Absolutely. I've been meaning to find a new serving platter, and I could use a little entertainment that doesn't involve Biscuit trying to butter a napkin.”
From behind the counter, Biscuit's cream and brass head rotated.
“THE NAPKIN WAS EXTREMELY DRY.”
“See?” Suzy said. “I need an afternoon out.”
